Wigs: Selection Tips and Financial Resources

Before purchasing a wig, you should research the many available options to determine the type of wig that would best meet your needs.  The buying guide shown in the link below contains good information on different wig types and options (sizing, hair type, cap type, style, and color).

While there are a vast number of wigs that can be purchased online, it is best to try on a variety of wigs to find what looks and feels best on you.  Once you find the wig that works for you, make note of the brand, style, and color.  You can then shop around online for the best deal.  The price of the same wig can vary from one provider to the next.

You should also verify your insurance benefits before purchasing a wig.  Some insurance plans will pay for all or a portion of your wig (scalp hair prosthesis) when hair loss is due to chemotherapy and/or radiation. Verify all insurance requirements in your benefit details.  Your insurance plan may require that the wig be in a certain price range.  When submitting a claim for reimbursement, it is best to include a doctor’s prescription for a scalp hair prosthesis for chemotherapy induced alopecia.  Your medical oncologist can write you a prescription.  You should also submit an itemized receipt for the wig.

If your insurance plan does not cover the cost of a wig and you are not able to afford one, there are other options available.  The American Cancer Society often provides free or reduced price wigs through their local programs.  To search for resources in your area, go to the following link:

Enter your zip code.  In the “Program Type” dropdown, select “Wigs – Free or Reduced Cost.”  The website will list local resources that you can then contact for more information. The American Cancer Society also provides affordable hair loss products through their not-for-profit website “Tender Loving Care” which you can find through the following link:

For cancer patients in Texas, the Texas-based chain salon, Visible Changes, offers free wigs through their “THAIR For You” program.  You can visit one of their salons in Houston, Austin, Dallas, or San Antonio where they will assist with hair removal and fit and style a new wig for you from their collection.  For more information, visit their website at the following link:

While I used cold caps during chemotherapy to prevent hair loss, my hair thinned to the point where I felt more comfortable wearing a wig when getting dressed up.  I chose a synthetic wig, because of the low maintenance, with a lace front cap that allowed for flexibility in where I parted the hair and gave a more natural look.
